CINDY BLAZEVIC | XIT-RM

PILLBILLY FANTASIA

November 15, 2012 - January 5, 2013

Cindy Blažević takes over the XIT-RM space with sculptural tiles, featuring photographic images of pills. The result is a sensory overload for the viewer – an immersion into the glossy, candy-coloured, overwhelmingly tempting world of medication. The room provides an escape from the darker hues and rougher textures of reality, as well invites the viewer to lose oneself in the Fantasia of pills.

(DA BAO)
(TAKEOUT)

Organized and circulated by the Varley Art Gallery of Markham

November 15, 2012 - January 5, 2013

(Da bao)(Takeout) is an attempt to locate a cross-cultural and social dynamic between China and the West, specifically Canada, by focusing on artists who investigate, adapt and instill ideas from abroad into their practices, while appreciating the unavoidable slippages that occur in the transference of ideas from one ethnicity to another. The title of the exhibition refers to occurrences of social and cultural shifts between people and places, using food as a metaphor for how we “digest” other cultures.

Does focusing upon the New Canadian landscape of the Chinese community blur the boundary between what is “Canadian” and what is “New”? New Cultural Topographics creates a new understanding of decentralized social spaces to provoke thought about the future of the edge city as a postsuburban condition.

LILA LEWIS IRVING

CON SPIRITO

March 1 - April 29, 2012

The Art Gallery of Mississauga is honoured to present a retrospective of Lila Lewis Irving's work, highlighting her career spanning over fifty years. Spontaneity is the root of invention for Irving. Her paintings, in her words, are a “response to a visual or emotional reality. The shapes are simplified and bold, the colours are saturated, the brushstrokes energetic.”

The accompanying catalogue for this exhibition, Appassionata, can be be found on our publications shop online and in gallery.
