Explore My Mother’s Tongue: Now Available at the Art Gallery of Mississauga

The Art Gallery of Mississauga is proud to announce that our brand-new exhibition catalogue, My Mother’s Tongue, is now available for purchase. This beautifully curated publication offers a deep dive into the recently presented exhibition, which featured the work of artists Joi T. Arcand, Insoon Ha, Mohau Modisakeng, Baljit Singh, and James Webb, curated by AGM TD Programming Curator Musha Neluheni.

A Tribute to Language, Identity, and Culture
My Mother’s Tongue examined the profound impact of language loss and cultural silencing. As educator Dottie LeBeau reminds us:

“Losing the language means losing the culture. We need to know who we are because it makes a difference in who our children are.”

The exhibition traced histories of colonialism, oppression, and cultural erasure—from early colonialism in Canada to apartheid South Africa and beyond—highlighting how language and identity were forcibly muted. Through various artistic mediums, the works explored grief, anger, and resilience, offering a platform for voices that were once silenced.

The catalogue captures these narratives, combining installation photographs by Toni Hafkenscheid with thoughtful essays and reflections by Khwezi Gule and AGM TD Programming Curator Musha Neluheni, allowing readers to engage deeply with the exhibition’s themes.
